Clinical psychologists complete an accredited Masters or Doctoral degree, with eight years of training and supervised practice to obtain their specialist title. Their training is recognised as developing specialised skills in assessing psychological / mental health issues and providing evidence-based treatments. Clinical Psychologists are regarded as having the highest levels of psychology training in Australia.
You may access Clinical Psychology services without a referral, however, to claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per year (see fees and rebates above), you will need a Mental Health Care/Treatment Plan and Referral from your GP or Psychiatrist.
You may be eligible for a rebate from your private health fund – this will usually be considerably less than the Medicare rebate and will depend on the type of benefits package you have with them. They usually do not require a GP referral but please check with your health fund for specific requirements and benefits.
